Ask Carol: my first job interview

Dear Carol,

Last week I had my first job interview at a tech company. I was so nervous that I arrived 20 minutes late because I took the wrong bus. I didn't check the route the night before. During the interview, I couldn't answer a question about my skills, and I forgot to ask anything about the company. I haven't heard from them yet. What should I do now? (Lucas, 18)

Dear Lucas,

Don't be so hard on yourself! You should have checked the route, of course, but everybody makes mistakes. If you apologized for being late, the interviewer might have appreciated your honesty. You must send a thank-you email today: it can make a difference. Next time, prepare answers about your skills, and you could also research the company in advance.
